Radio Controlled Helicopters - Gift Guide
Tip: Radio Control Helicopters are complex and never "easy" to fly unless you choose a CX or Dual Rotor version. We strongly recommend a helicopter with "coaxial design" for first time pilots which means two main rotor blades that rotate in opposing directions. This makes the helicopter much more stable and easier to learn to fly.
Radio control helicopters are made with both electric and gas (nitro) engines. All gas or nitro helicopters are kits that are very expensive and require the separate purchase of a radio system, gyros and other parts. They are designed for very experienced pilots and often cost upwards of $1,500 by the time you have all the needed parts purchased.
Electric helicopters are sold in both ready to fly (RTF) and (ARF) almost ready to fly versions. The ready to fly version is the most popular. ARF helicopter kits are also designed for experienced modelers who already have the needed radio and other parts that are not included with the kit.
Ready to fly electric helicopters come in two versions. One is standard and the other is coaxial or dual counter rotating blades. The dual blade system is designed for first time pilots with no experience. They are much easier to fly than a standard r/c helicopter.
An important thing to consider when buying a radio control helicopter is to verify that parts are available for the helicopter. If you purchase a helicopter that has no parts available you may not be able to get flying again after a crash and your new helicopter will have to sit until you can find the parts. We stock, or can special order most parts for all of our helicopters here.
If you are buying a toy helicopter for a child the Havoc Heli and Battling Havoc Set is a very good choice. It is very easy to fly but there is a trade off. Basically the easier to fly a helicopter is, the less you can fly it with precision. For a toy that is not usually a problem.
Our top recommendation for a radio control helicopter for a pilot with no r/c helicopter flight experience is the Blade CX2. The Blade CX2 helicopter is factory test flown before shipment and is ready to fly out of the box. It is designed for someone with no experience and is easy to fly.
Tip: You may want to consider buying training gear for the first time pilot. This allows for an extra margin of safety for the first few rough landings. It can also help prevent rotor blade strikes and save money on parts replacements.
For more experienced radio control airplane or helicopter pilots or for "brave" new pilots that don't mind spending time (and money) on repairs for crashed helicopters can try out one of the standard electric radio control helicopters we have. We stock and carry several very good models.
Checkout these state of the art helicopters capable of aerobatic Flight.
We have several other very nice models to choose from here in our electric helicopter section of our website.
Looking for a gas/nitro helicopter kit we have those too! (For advanced pilots only)
